Applications and Tools, Second Life

HTML On a Prim Now Dynamic

Thanks to Epredator by way of Hamlet at New World Notes for pointing out that HTML on a prim now has the capacity to display dynamic Web pages. OK, sure, you can’t click them yet and it’s still not HTML textures (as compared to using a media stream on a parcel) but we’re getting close. As Epredator notes on Eightbar (and Hamlet quotes):

“The ability to get to web information in a shared fashion always seemed to be a killer app,” Mr. Potato writes. “There is so much content out there and people don’t always want to rebuild everything. So in the hunt for interoperability at the data level we also now have some tools to hand in Second Life for interoperability on glass.”

One of the attractions of Project Wonderland to educators (and others) is its ability to embed Web objects. The inclusion of ‘legacy content’ easily in a build is facilitated by the inclusion of Web pages. The applications, of course, go far beyond that, including opportunities for commerce, knowledge bases, and, as Hamlet points out, the ability to view Twitter streams.

Just imagine, some day soon, being able to view Twitter from in world while playing Tiny Empires. Better prepare for the onslaught of claims that virtual worlds are addictive.
