maybe they have done "just enough" right- usaully after doing it wrong--P) but they fix and copy- i give them that credit;)- so that open sim servers could live on and go beyond amiga fan clubs...

as to movies, there were just as many about VR in 92-94.leading up to the matirx in 99, so Not too sure camerons movie will really do much for SL or club peguin pics.

Many "big pr" VR worlds from the 2006 push have already gone dodo, and i see many more following end of first quarter..

we'll see.. only a month away for avatar;).

I've been watching the bleeding edge for longer than I care to say and I've been disappointed as often as elated by what has happened. Back in the late 80s, early 90s, Atari came out with a revolutionary computer called the ST. OS on chip?!!! Outrageous! A blend of Mac and PC compatibility. And it was labeled a game machine and not serious business, a Dow Jones pundit made it his own mission to poison Atari as an investment, and an amazing computer left the field.

We've all seen good and bad "killer apps" rise and fall, and we've seen "roach apps" (anything by Microsoft, for example) that cannot be killed. I get the impression that Second Life could be a roach app: try as you might, LL has done enough things right and continues to leave it to the residents to make of it what they will.

With movies like Surrogate and Avatar, the event horizon is getting closer for the average person to comprehend what Second Life represents. Business models are evolving, technology is raising the power of PCs to handle the voracious appetite of SL, and the wisdom of the crowd will congregate to SL, despite what we think.

Okay, it's pretty late here in Belgium, and that may not be the best moment to comment. But I'll do it anyway. As much as I respect & admire Philip, I just cannot find the energy to analyze each and every snippet of information about what he might do or not do.
The latest major developments in social media, IMHO, are Google Wave and the Twitter lists. These things will potentially have a huge impact on the way we use the web and the internet at large.
I'm sorry (and disappointed) that I don't see any such major evolutions in virtual worlds - unless someone really believes that SL Enterprise will revolutionize the adoption of virtual worlds as work environments or that the new site of Second Life will change the way in which hundreds and hundreds of millions use online social networks.
Second Life offers unique possibilities to network and to have great encounters. But the big changes in media and collaboration are not taking place inside that world, but outside. If Philip finds ways to make Second Life more relevant in the context of those changes, more relevant as in being far more integrated in the web and pulling in far more people, I'll be very excited about that.

I must admit that I spent the bulk of my time as my SL agent rather than as my SL avatar.

It was way more fun speculating again. Guess I was right the first time.
