#29, @ "Nowness" a significant cultural challenge. “Nowness” is dangerous, and the collective is weakened when “Nowness” is disconnected with the past...the collective past. The discussion of a shift in the discussion of history, & the shift in paradigm to a temporal premise from a spatial one are both interesting. However, the apparent underlying idea of what the Cybersphere is/should be imho runs counter to an either/or – time-based instead of spatial organization – determination...as does the Al Qaeda remark. When I read that, the first thing I thought of was the Ku Klux Klan nation, a non-geographically specific group recognized by the FBI.

If we are about learning how to think differently – and thereby perceive and be differently – then a good starting place may be the prim level of ideation in ways that offer an egalitarian engagement of some fundamental cultural differences.

Virtual nations — whose members can live anywhere, united by the Internet — threaten to shatter mankind like glass into razor-sharp fragments that draw blood. We know what virtual nations can be like: Al Qaeda is one of the first.

Al Qaeda is not one of the first. Many decades before, there have been peaceful virtual nations based on shared worldviews and ideas. Remember the 60s? Even before the 20thy century, we had virtual nations. Many were started by followers of great people with beautiful ideas: we call this virtual nations "religions" and "philosophies".

Virtual nations can unite people beyond geographical borders, and make our world a better place. I think facilitating the establishment of virtual nations is one of the best results of the Internet, and I am saddened to see that Gelernter

Our world is _already_ "shattered like glass into razor-sharp fragments that draw blood" -- and the fragmentation is often based on irrelevant geographic accidents. And history demonstrates that nations can change from great to horrible places in only a few decades.

We did not choose the countries we were born in, but we can and do choose the communities we want to be a part of. Therefore, our identification with distributed intentional communities can (and should) be stronger than our identification with geographical territories.

"31. But — the Internet could be the most powerful device ever invented for understanding the past, and the texture of time." - I would agree with it, if the domains would be bought forever. But if the man who has created a site is dead - his site will die too because of unpaid domain, hosting etc... So maybe someone has to think about free domains to create a past in future? :D

As an immersionist rather than an augmentalist I'm saddened by the direction the Secondlife platform is taking.
I can find all I'm looking for on the web.
Period.
Stop.
End.

I come to Secondlife to wander LL route #7...
To sit on a prim and sit...
To chat without a direction...

Maybe, just maybe, to help dress a nooblet...
