Lego's, Tinkertoys, Lincoln Logs, Playdoh, etc. Interestingly, the makers of these items don't set down any rules on how they can be used - they leave that to the imagination. The excitement, joy, and yes the next GREAT idea lies in the imagination - in fostering the ability of each person to tap and express his/her essence or spark of creativity. The tools are the means, not the ends. If only the Auntie Ems of the world would think to ask how they could encourage and (gasp)support those creative sparks - instead of trying to control and direct them towards specific, algorithmic outcomes - they might find themselves with a genuine masterpiece on their hands instead of a bunch of grumpy, disinterested relatives who can't wait to get home to watch the boob tube. Stepping off my soapbox now with a tip of the hat to Dusan for daring to point out that the Emperor is wearing no clothes ;-) The problem with Auntie Em, and most adults who have allowed the rules of the modern world and fascination with widgets to run their lives, is that she has forgotten what every child who comes to her table knows (yes even Sally knows, but she is a conscientious child who doesn’t want to hurt Auntie Em’s feelings). In previous years, Sally could whip up her crown in no time. But this year, Auntie Em rearranged everything in the craft set, packaged it in a new box, and added clay as one of the available materials to work with. She was sure she had finally made something that would attract the others to her table! The trouble was - Sally could no longer find anything, and struggled for hours to make that darn crown. Were Auntie Em's efforts in vain? Or does it really only need to matter to Sally? Without Auntie Em's help, Sally might be slightly less than she now is. Perhaps that is all Sally needed to figure out that her family sucks and she needs to find a new family who cares about her talents and desire to nurture her to her true potential.
