You see a lot of green and still a lot of 1.23.5. Yes, there are some oldbies using 2.0...but it would seem that the primary user is those who have recently joined and download the first viewer they see advertised. I realize this answer,(or opinion),doesn't truly respond to your question. @Troy McLuhan

(Sample sizes larger than 5% of the SL population, please.) The cross-section of SL residents you interact with probably isn't representative of the whole SL population. I didn't say retrofit everything to 2004 or something. My point about lower-spec computers isn't to lower the specs of SL, but to make it easier to tweak the settings. I mean, it works for games, it adjusts fidelity based on your machine, why do I need to tweak 100 buttons to get SL to work? Or am I missing something? I mean - did you SEE Gwyn's post on optimizing performance with the new viewer? It was sooooo arcane - "first, open the advanced menu..." Nowhere did I say anything about getting it to run on crap machines. My point is about making it SIMPLER to lower your draw distance, turn off the bling and particles and whatever else. A 'dumbed down' SL isn't the direction to take, but an interface that makes it easier to dial up or down seems to me like it would go a long way to letting people with lower-spec machines last more than a few minutes without crashing. Why is it so hard to ask for the old viewer with new shared media, these things are only complicated because Linden has yet to do it. Why did they bother announcing Mesh last year,LAST SLCC, we're almost at the next years SLCC and Mesh is still not here and no target date. Turtle pace... Now you understand one of LLs problems. None of their users are realistic. You want a more realistic, less dated 3d experience AND you want it to run on crap PCs with integrated graphics?

I have a very high end machine...and I absolutely love the look. I do realize that likely most people use a computer primarily for things other than this graphics heavy application...(and no, I'll bet testing wasn't done one a $600USD Best Buy PC). The other thing is all the high tech stuff that The Benevolent Monarchy would like to bring us. I fear that mesh for instance, is just another of those innovations that will look so cool...yet remove the *average* user from content creation. I see the techical aspects pushing the majority further into a almost total consumer oriented culture. My gosh, if we can't get them to understand any viewer... how will we ever get them to create content. OH! (slaps self) I get it! A 3D chat room where we advertise farmville tractors!
