03.12.08A Study of a Music Appreciation Course Imported into SLFrom the curiously-named League for Innovation in the Community College - sounds like superheroes being sent to save education! - comes a report entitled "Using Second Life to Enhance Teaching and Learning." The study shows how immersive environments such as SL are helping education. In this case, SL puts students "in" the music and by using interactive quizzes and other educational tools. The study's main thesis is that "developing a humanities oasis in SL fosters the combination of synchronous listening and discussion with the rich world of the humanities that surrounds the music." 02.08.08Education in Second Life: Students and the UnexpectedEducators at Carleton University attended a Second Life demonstration intended for teachers and came up with a list of pros and cons listed in a blog entry here. The presentation, by Sarah “Intelligirl” Robbins, opened up the eyes of the Carleton staff to the potential of Second Life in the classroom. In fact, the university is hosting its own seminar on March 20 called “Second Life Basics for Educators” based on the positive experience.
