Britain's Labour Party recently used Second Life as a vehicle to communicate between politicians and Web surfers, according to Webuser.
The event, part of a Labor Party conference, was hosted by Microsoft and the Social Market Foundation, a policy think tank. The event connected participants to politicians and delegates at the conference, something interesting to note because in general, political conferences tend to be more exclusive and held in secure zones. We can't imagine the virtual part of the conference was open entirely to the public, but was most likely an invite-only affair - something we haven't confirmed.
