TechCrunch today reported on the launch of a virtual world by the Electric Sheep Company, called Webflock.
Webflock is a Flash-based 3D virtual world that will work in any browser that supports Flash (which is pretty well all of them). ESC, which was a leader in bringing big brands into Second Life, has moved out of “big worlds” and into little ones.
Advertised features of Webflock include:
- Easy to use and accessible to anyone running Flash in the Web browser
- Extendable with games and other custom interactivity and features
- A brand-owned, customized and focused user experience
Coming on the heels of Lively, integration of Vivaty with Facebook and other social sites, and a seemingly endless stream of small “worlds” for chat and as sites for playing games and consuming media, it will be interesting to see whether the lessons ESC learned on the big platforms will translate into success on a smaller one - but hey, this time they don’t have Linden to turn to if there are issues of concurrency, server load, or lag.
Maybe it makes more sense to run with “My World, My Imagination, My Coder Geeks” even if you’re more a me-too than at the bleeding edge.
