Boeing’s Virtual Manufacturing Site

Boeing, one of the world’s most successful makers of airplanes and defense systems, has launched a virtual manufacturing center.

The center, which cost $1.2 million to open, is a public-private partnership with the local Port Authority in Heath-Newark-Licking County, Ohio. It is estimated that the center will bring 30 to 60 jobs to the area.

The center will mostly be focused on creating virtual manufacturing prototypes of items the company will build. Boeing can share the prototypes with other offices around the country and around the world, helping to enhance collaboration and teamwork.

“We can play out what-if scenarios in the 3-D environment,” said Mike Murasky, operations manager at the Heath facility, to the Advocate. “We can see ergonomics and how employees can do the building.”

At the site’s the launch: according to the Newark Advocate, Boeing held a ‘virtual ribbon-cutting, a virtual fly-in from above the site, and a virtual walk-through of the facility using 3D goggles:
